The history of the Baymeadows/Deerwood area of Jacksonville is only known by longtime residents of JAX. An area whose primary purpose was the production of turpentine and grazing of cattle has certainly transformed over the years. Once populated by acres and acres of rolling pine forests and hundreds of acres of the Skinner Dairy farms, the area is now a very upscale bedroom community of Jacksonville. With numerous luxury subdivisions, the visions of the Skinner family have definitely come full circle. For those that may think the Skinner name seems to have another connection to Jacksonville, they are correct. The Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd was named after a gym teacher at Robert E. Lee High School on the West side of Jacksonville by the name of Leonard Skinner, a member of the very same family. The Skinner family graciously donated much of the land from their farms to create Southside Boulevard & J Turner Butler Boulevard. The development of this area would never have been possible without their foresight and generosity. The area is anchored by The Avenues Mall, but has numerous strip plazas and restaurants. The Skinners envisioned an upscale community within a short commute to Jacksonville, and that precisely describes the Baymeadows & Deerwood areas!
